There’s still time to do fall lawn & gardening prep! For those that have been procrastinating, there is still time to plant the winter wheat you’ve been planning to plant for weeks now. October is a good time to plant. The cooler temperatures and the chance for some seasonal rains should be a prime time. Broadcast winter wheat seed at the rate of 90 to 110 lbs. per acre. If you are wondering about planting annual ryegrass seeds, there’s still time to plant ryegrass from seed as well. Broadcast annual ryegrass seed at the rate of 25 to 30 lbs. per acre.
 Time for Pre Emergent-
If you have not treated your lawn for weeds with a pre-emergent, you still have some time to do so. But, keep in mind, you will not control all the winter weeds and grass if applying the product now. I have noticed some of the winter grasses in our area lawns have already started to sprout. Ideally, to get a good kill on winter weeds, the first week of September would have been the best time to apply. Apply a combination herbicide such as Hi-Yield Turf & Ornamental Weed & Grass Stopper now to still get some control of the winter weed problem.
Try planting fescue grass seed if you’ve been thinking about what to do with the shady areas in the lawn. Fescue is an evergreen grass that thrives in the shade almost year round. I say almost because fescue will suffer if it is not well-watered, especially during our 100 degree summer days. Fescue does great in the shade but you will need to apply the seed down pretty thick. This grass does not spread like Bermuda or St. Augustine grasses. Plant fescue seed at the rate of 5 to 10 lbs per 1000 sq. ft.; in 14 to 21 days, you’ll have an evergreen lawn most of the year. If you’re looking for just a green lawn this winter, try annual ryegrass. Plant annual ryegrass seeds now for a green lawn all winter long at the rate of 10 to 15 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft.
