Corn Gluten Meal serves as both a pre-emergent herbicide for weed control as well as a fertilizer. Corn Gluten interferes with the germination of seeds. Put it down early in the Spring (depending on the weather, between February 15 and March 15 in the Fort Worth area) and in the Fall (again depending on the weather, September 15 through October 15) and it’ll help keep the weeds out. However, it has no effect on post-emergent weeds, weeds that have already germinated, or perennial weeds.

Corn Gluten is a weed suppressor as well as a plant food. This non-toxic product is a great alternative to chemical-based weed prevention products for weed control in yards, driveways, and gardens. The spreadable version of the product is not as effective a weed preventer as the meal form, but it is much easier to apply. Both forms also make great all-natural fertilizers. Corn gluten is a by-product of corn processing, and it is a completely natural residual product with 9% nitrogen content.

Apply at a rate of 20 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. Water in thoroughly then allow the soil to dry out for several days before resuming your normal watering schedule. You’ll see better results each year that you use it!

As with any pre-emergent herbicide, remember that it will stop ALL seeds from spouting. Therefore, do not apply where you will be overseeding your lawn or where gardens will be planted.
