Hay Report October 2011

The weather is obviously a big concern. We’ve had a few showers in the last month but not enough rain to turn things around.  The cooler nights and shorter days mean NO more appreciable hay will be cut this growing season.  I hope you have all your winter needs secured by now.

So, where do we go from here? No one knows.  We are entering uncharted waters.  I’ve never seen anything like this in my 37 years of feed business.  Going forward, future  summers and droughts will be measured to the drought of 2011. In my opinion the hay shortage hasn’t started yet. Don’t wait secure your winter hay supply. The average frost date in North Texas is typically around October 24th.  Normally we see a 25% increase in hay demand during the winter months. Due to the drought we don’t have the supply to support that increase this year !

On the bright side I expect feed prices to stabilize this winter, hopefully I am correct.

Round Bales: still coming out of Florida. Prices have increased a bit.  We added an additional source, hopefully this will last another month.  Our hay grower in Florida is not optimistic.  Prices will increase dramatically after this last cutting.  We do not expect to have round bales available this winter.

2 string Coastal: we have enough supply secured until the end of the year. High prices will continue to be an issue.

2. String Alfalfa: We did pick up a nice load of 2 string unexpectedly. However we do not expect availability this winter.

3 string Bermuda:  This is the hardest hay we have to source. Not much available and trucking is almost impossible. I expect this product to top out around $30.00 a bale if we can find it. We received 2 truckloads this week, which was the last our grower had.

3 String Alfalfa: We can get the product now if we can get the trucks. So far so good.

This winter is going to be interesting.

See you around the Barn
