Kenny'sCornerGraphicMarch is here, which means spring is right around the corner. We’ve had an unusually cold and unfortunately dry winter, and seems the only moisture we’ve gotten has come from snow and ice. Conversations lately have centered on weather and what it will mean for spring gardens and hay.  As I’m writing this, we’re seeing some rain in the forecast, and I sure hope it follows through.

In February Megan and I traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to visit the Purina Animal Nutrition Center. If you haven’t heard of it, be sure to check it out at This 1,200 acre working farm has more than 3,000 animals on site, along with a dozen PhD’s devoted strictly to nutrition research on feed. If you’re not currently feeding Purina feeds, you may want to research how your current feed is formulated and tested.  They may be testing their products on your animals!

We have many exciting events happening around our stores this month. Dunn’s Fish Farm will be at our Azle location on March 11 from 4:30-5:30pm. They are a great source to help you stock up your pond or lake. Click HERE to learn more.

A Horse Owner’s Workshop will take place on March 18 at our Benbrook location. Dinner starts at 6:30 pm followed by the meeting at 7 pm. HOW meetings provide horse owners with up-to-date information on equine nutrition, veterinary issues, health and maintenance care, training techniques, the latest gear and more. Click here to RSVP for the event or call our Benbrook location at 817-249-1061 to reserve your spot.

Our Haltom City store is hosting a Canning Class March 29 at 10am. There is a small fee of $5 to help cover the cost of materials. Click HERE to learn more about the event. You may RSVP by calling the Haltom City store at 817-831-8166.

Chick Days are right around the corner, and backyard flocks are a growing trend you may want to get involved in. Gina Babgy with Purina Animal Nutrition will discuss the essentials for raising a healthy flock, selecting the right breed, and egg production. We will have two meetings this year:

• March 8, 2014 at Russell Feed & Supply Jacksboro Location (9 a.m.) Click HERE to RSVP.

• March 29, 2014 at Russell Feed & Supply Saginaw Location (9 a.m.) Click HERE to RSVP.

Hay Report:

At this point, we are in dire need of rain. Our local source for hay supply has been totally depleted. We are currently shipping in some 2 string coastal Bermuda from Oklahoma and Arkansas, and we’re continuing to work hard to provide top quality hay for the best prices we can offer.

I’m very concerned about our 3 string products from Arizona and California. As you may have heard, water has been cut off to farmers in California, which will put a lot of pressure on Arizona production. Overall, this will not be good for price or availability. Sandy, Megan, and I travel to Arizona this week to meet with a couple of hay growers. The search never ends.

See you around the barn,
