I know it’s only May but don’t be bugged by the June beetle (aka June bug). For weeks now the June beetle has been collecting around your front porch light at night. There is not a whole lot you can do to control them this year. But, you can control next yeara crop of June beetle by applying a grub worm killer. On average you apply a grub killer at the end of July through the first of August. You are saying I want to kill June bugs not grubs. If you follow the life cycle of the June beetle you will find out it starts out as a grub.
Life Cycle: Adults begin to emerge in spring. During adult flights large numbers of beetles can be attracted to lights. Peak flight occurs in mid to late June. Females, less attracted to lights, tunnel 2 to 5 inches into the soil and deposit eggs. In 3 to 4 weeks, small grubs (larvae) hatch from eggs. The larval remains in the soil from the fall through spring. In spring and early summer the white grub pupate and the adult emerge. The cycle starts all over again.
While in the soil the young grub feeds on the roots of your grass and plants. A large number of grubs can cause lawn damage. Severely damaged grass will turn yellow and can be rolled up like carpet. Remember to apply grub killer at the end of July and first of August. We do have a supply of products to help.
Now on to field sandbur (grass bur) in your yards. NOW is the time to apply the second application of pre-emergent to help control grass bur. You apply organic corn gluten meal or chemical pre-emergent to help stop the bur germination. To insure complete control of germinating grass burrs in heavily infested areas, extend the residual of the herbicide barrier in the soil and thus extend the length of control period by making applications of the pre-emergent herbicide EVERY 6 WEEKS through September. Once the burs emerge use your grass catcher attachment on your mower. Catch and dispose to help stop the spread of the bur problem. A chemical control is Image Consumer Concentrate read all label directions.
