Mike’s March Garden Newsletter
March is finally here with no hard freezes in the forecast. This means the stage is set for a bad insect season. Customers are already talking about grasshopper issues. Nolo Bait is one of the better grasshopper baits to use. Nolo Bait is a pathogen that only kills the grasshoppers and crickets in their young stage of life. When grasshoppers are first seen, apply Nolo Bait for better control.
Other beneficial insect controls soon to be available at Russell Feed:
- Ladybugs eat up to 5000 aphids in their time.
- Trichogramma Wasp- The female wasp will seek out and destroy about 50 pest eggs by laying an egg inside the pest egg.
- Praying Mantis feed on moths, mosquitoes, flies and more.
- Beneficial Nematodes- More than 230 insect pests are susceptible, including: cabbage root maggots, codling moth larvae, corn earworm, cucumber beetles, cutworms, flea beetles, flea larvae, fungus gnat larvae, Japanese beetle larvae, root maggots and sod webworms.
Customers are asking questions about snakes. With the warm weather, snakes are moving around. Russell Feed has several snake repellents that can be applied around areas to prevent them from inhabiting the area.
There is no time like now to start a vegetable garden. Keep March 17th as a target date to start planting:
- Beans (pole or bush)
- Corn, Cucumber
Come into Russell Feed & Supply for your planting guide to view planting times, planting depth, days to maturity and more. Think ahead for October, how great it would be to tell everyone you grew and carved your own pumpkins. Plant your pumpkin seeds around March 24th and see in 85 to 120 days a mature pumpkin. Send us pictures of your pumpkins or vegetables to show off you hard work. Make planting pumpkins a classroom project and I will supply the pumpkin seeds. Contact me via email how many students and I will provide the seeds.
There is still time to stop grass burrs from sprouting. Apply a pre-emergent such as organic corn gluten meal or any product containing Dimension. Apply now and thru mid-March, then 90 days later to help slow the spread of the grass burrs. Mid-March is a great time to fertilize your lawns. Use Fertilome Weed & Feed with Dimension to feed and control weeds & grasses from sprouting. Fertilome Weed Out with Fertilizer will feed and kill broadleaf weeds already sprouting in the lawns.
We have our own Russell brands like Nutra Grow 15-5-10, 15-5-10 Slow Release and 28-0-0 Slow Release fertilizers available to be applied to your lawns today.
