budding-tree-closeupIt’s early March and all the trees and woody perennials are starting to leaf out. With several days of 70 plus temperatures, they think spring is here. According to the calendar, spring doesn’t officially start until March 20th and the average last freeze for this area is March 13th. That being said, there are still plenty of things to do to get ready for spring.

Weed Prevention

There is still time to apply a pre-emergent to help stop weeds coming up from seeds. This should be done sooner rather than later in the month. For those weeds already up, use a product like 20% vinegar. 20% vinegar is all organic and will kill any green vegetation it is applied to. Apply only to vegetation you intend to kill.

Where there are large weed problems use a broadleaf weed killer containing 2, 4-D. 2, 4-D is an herbicide and selective weed killer. 2, 4-D is sold under many labeled names and brands. 2, 4-D will control weeds like dandelion, chickweed, henbit, poison ivy and much more. 2, 4-D is also available in a fertilizer mix. With any weed killer be sure and read and follow all label directions.

Prepare Fruit and Pecan Trees

With spring fast approaching, fruit and pecan trees need to be sprayed now with a horticulture or dormant oil spray.  A 97% oil emulsion should be sprayed before bud break on pecans and if scale is observed on peaches and plums.  For a season-long spray guide, call your County Extension Office or click here for a fruit and nut tree spray schedule.

Mid-March is a good time to start fertilization of the lawns. Russell’s house brand of fertilizer is made here in Fort Worth. It is formulated for the soil in our area. Try our 15-5-10, 15-5-10 slow release or 28-0-0 slow release. All three formulations will green and grow the lawn. For organic customers, Russell’s offers a full line of Nature’s Guide organic lawn foods. Don’t forget to fertilize the trees and shrubs.
