February 3 marks my 39th year in the feed business. I remember it like it was yesterday. Gary Smith, my Vocational Ag teacher at Haltom High School, knew about a feed store job that had become available. I remember him telling me to “go get that feed store job”. I listened to him, and went to work for Pete and Connie Ruthardt at Ruthardt Feed and have been blessed to be a part of the industry ever since. It is truly a blessing to go to work each day and love what you do!
The Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo is in full swing until February 8. If you haven’t made it out to the event, it’s really worth the trip. The Star-Telegram recently published an article about a 16-year-old stock show contestant, who was blinded in a vehicle accident in 2011. The contestant’s heifer took 2nd place in its class in the Junior Heifer Show, and to me the story really exemplifies the spirit of the FWSSR. You can read the full article HERE.
Also, the Tarrant County Junior Livestock Show is around the corner, which will take place from February 27 until March 1. Over the years Russell Feed has given more than $100,000 in the sale, making the TCJLS our biggest philanthropic effort. We believe strongly in supporting homegrown youth in local 4H and FFA chapters by supporting them in the TCJLS. I love going to the show every year and getting to witness kids’ hard work pay off.
We are excited to be participating again in the 24th Annual Fort Worth Home and Garden Show. It will take place February 21-23 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Be sure to stop by and visit our booth, as we’d love to talk with you about planting your garden and working your lawn.
Last but not least, February 14th is right around the corner. Whether or not you have a date this Valentine’s Day, you can spread the love through the 2014 Valentine Pet Food Drive for the Don’t Forget to Feed Me pet food pantry. We are happy to have all our locations serve as donation drop off sights, so instead of sending the normal card or flowers to a loved one, consider honoring them this Valentine’s Day by helping feed an animal in need. You can learn more about this wonderful organization in our community HERE.
The only shortage we foresee will be in 2 string coastal hay, which we expect to run out of this month. However, we have plenty of 3 string coastal available.
See you around the barn,
