It is already September and it is still 100 plus degrees out.  We should be getting some kind of relief soon.   The average temperatures for September are highs of 87.7  and lows of 67.2 .  Average rain fall for the month is 2.42”.  Any rainfall would be welcome right now.  For those areas where bare ground is showing in your lawns and pastures, wow is a good time to start your annual rye grass seed planting at the rate of 10 to 15lbs. per. 1000 sq. ft.  If there is no rain in sight in the next week or so, consider holding off until rain is in the forecast to help save water resources.  There is still time to get Bermuda grass seed up and established before the first frost.  Planting needs to be as soon as possible on Bermuda seed.

Food plots for wildlife should be started this month.  There are several great wildlife food plot mixtures available or you can plant wheat, oats and blackeye peas.  Plant the plot mixtures according to label.  Plant wheat at 90 to 110lbs. per acre, oats at 75 to 85lbs. per acre and blackeye peas at 50 to 60lbs. per acre.

Planting a fall garden has been tough in this heat.  Starting September 1st broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber and spinach seeds can be planted.   Leaf lettuce seeds, onion bulbs around September 15.  Remember to use a 10-20-10 or 13-13-13 or any of Nature’s Guide organic fertilizers on your gardens.

Using a Pre-emergent this year?  Pre-emergents such as corn gluten meal should be applied around mid September.

How does it work?
The Gluten Meal in Nature’s Guide Corn Gluten Meal inhibits root formation of germinating seeds.  Without roots the plants cannot get water and soon die.

What weeds does it work on?
Twenty-two (22) weed species have been screened for susceptibility to corn gluten meal:  black medic, black nightshade, buckhorn plantain, catchweed, bedstraw, common lambsquarter, curly dock, dandelion, purslane, redroot, pigweed, velvet leaf, annual bluegrass, barnyard grass, creeping bentgrass, giant foxtail, large crabgrass, orchard grass, guackgrass, shattercane, smooth crabgrass, wooly cupgrass and yellow foxtail.  Corn Gluten meal significantly reduced plant survival, shoot length, and root development of all tested species.  For those areas where new seeding is going to take place, do not use a pre-emergent weed controls.  This will stop grass and vegetable seeds from germinating.
